Spring Beauty in Capetown
We had a wonderful spring vacation day in Capetown yesterday, hiking up Table Mountain on the Platteklip Gorge route and then seeing the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens.
The hike was strenuous enough, like climbing a staircase for 3200 feet, but had very sure footing and there was no way to get lost. Plenty of other people were around on this clear and sunny day, but we never felt crowded. It took about an hour and a half to reach the top.
At the top, we took in the beautiful views of the Cape, the Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean, and the well-fed dassies relaxing in the sun.
We had lunch at the cafe and then took the cable car for a swift and smooth trip down to the bottom. Wonderful!
Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is spectacular. We went on a free guided tour. Our guide pointed out many things we would have missed and shared fascinating information about the Garden, the plants, the region, and the birds. My favorite part was the protea garden, for the proteas and the birds busy gathering nectar there.
This is a male Cape Sugarbird.
A Double-Collared Sunbird
These exuberant beauties are my favorites of the proteas we saw:
Sights like these bring to mind the Canticle in the Daily Office of Morning Prayer:
Let the earth glorify the Lord,
praise him and highly exalt him for ever.
Glorify the Lord, O mountains and hills,
and all that grows upon the earth,
praise him and highly exalt him for ever.
Glorify the Lord, O springs of water, seas, and streams,
O whales and all that move in the waters.
All birds of the air, glorify the Lord,
praise him and highly exalt him for ever.
Great post 😁 check out my lastest work 😃

Dear Amy and Joe Many thanks for all the news you have shared with us. The Spring Beauty fills my heart knowing that you experiencing so much Of God’s gift in your new surroundings. We too have just shared some of the mystery of nature- we brought two monarch caterpillars into our home and gave the milkweed leaves, pwatched them eat, at last attached themselves to a stem and turned to a beautiful chrysalis and we wait patiently for beautiful butterflies to emerge!! Can you tell I am a true kindergarten teacher? I did this every year in the class room. A true gift from God! Allan and I miss you! Peace, Pat

Oh my, we just missed you! We were in Cape Town on the 31st, and 1 and 2 Sep. Our day at Table Mountain was shrouded in deep fog so we missed the great experience you had. We would have given anything to have crossed paths with you. Blessings on your work in Africa, and may health and happiness follow you everywhere. We miss you here with us, but are so happy you have this blog. Godspeed, Martha and Bob Morrissey

Oh my goodness! It would have been wonderful to see you! But how lovely to know you were here and we were on the same continent, even this far from home. Thank you for your good thoughts and prayers for us–we send them for you as well. We hope you and Bob are doing well and are so happy to hear you are traveling the world and enjoying God’s beautiful creations (even the ones that get shrouded in fog). Love, Amy and Joe

My heart is pounding with the beauty of your post. I never knew that Proteas came in so many varieties, only that it is the national flower of SA…..and the birds, yikes! so very beautiful. Your legs must be really strong, I never could have done that. Thanks for these exquisite posts! They make my day. Love to you both.
